Reference Genealogy Research Computer Classes

Computers | WiFi | Available Databases | Temporary Computer Cards

The Reference/Genealogy department houses five collections: Reference, Genealogy, Texas, Granger and Periodicals. We offer a quiet study area for our adult and teenaged patrons. All children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult in the Library.


Computers

Sims Library has many computers available for public use, including Internet access and Word Processing. Patrons without a Sims Library Card have access to the Email computers for a limited time. All computer users must be at least 14 years old in the Reference Department and must complete a Computer Policy form.

 

Free Wi-Fi @ Sims Library

Sims Library now offers free Wi-FiFebruary 6, 2010ree Internet access, but you must supply your own wireless device (laptop computer, etc.) and all necessary software. All Wireless users will be required to be aware of the Sims Library Wireless Policy.

 

Available Databases

  • Texshare
  • Patrons with a Sims Library Card have access to the TexShare Databases, a collection of authoritative and commericial-free databases covering hundreds of subjects, from education to genealogy. TexShare Databases are made available to the library by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and are available from any computer with Internet access.

  • Ancestry®: Library Edition
  • ProQuest has partnered with MyFamily.com to create Ancestry® Library Edition, one of the most important genealogical collections available today. It has unparalleled coverage of the United States and the United Kingdom, including census, vital, church, court, and immigration records, as well as record collections from Canada and other areas. This database is only available with a Sims Library Card in the Reference Department.

  • Gale Databases
  • The Gale Databases offer comprehensive access to literature, medical and legal documents. Databases include ContemporaryAuthors, Contemporary Literary Criticism, Dictionary of Literary Biography, Twayne Author Series, InfoTrac Custom Newspapers, Health and Wellness Resource Center and Gale LegalForms. Gale LegalForms provides a wide selection of Texas-specific legal forms, including real estate contracts, wills, pre-marital agreements, bankruptcy, divorce, landlord tenant and many others. Also included is a comprehensive attorney state directory* and a dictionary of legal definitions explained in laymen's language.

  • ReferenceUSA
  • Reference USA logo ReferenceUSA is an Internet-based reference service from the Library Division of infoUSA. The site was designed for use as a reference tool in libraries and is continually enhanced based upon suggestions from librarians and library patrons. The ReferenceUSA database contains, in module format, detailed information on more than 14 million US businesses and 210 million US residents.
  • Live Homework Help®
  • Live Homework Help is available for Kindergarten – 12th grade, college introduction level students, and adult learners seven days a week from 2 PM to Midnight CST. This program connects students to a real live tutor. Log on to the website, enter your grade level, then subject, and you will be connected to an expert tutor.     Live Homework Help will be closed on July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day

  • ResumeMaker is a service offered by Sims Library and funded in part by the Northeast Texas Library System and offers "everything you need to create professional-looking resumes and cover letters to help you get the job you want." Create your own account so you can save your work and access it later.

  • Salem History
  • Salem History logo

     

    Salem History: Great Events from History: The 20th Century 1941-1970 In this database, the mid-twentieth century receives worldwide coverage that prioritizes the needs of students at the high school and undergraduate levels. The events covered include the geopolitical events of the era--from World War II (1939-1945) and the Holocaust to the formation of the United Nations and the start of the Cold War in 1945, from the Korean War (1950-1953) to the war in Vietnam (1959-1975). Essays also address important social and cultural developments in literature, the arts, music, law, and social and civil rights legislation.

Temporary Computer Cards

Sims Library now offers Temporary Computer Cards for full Internet access to adults 18 and older. Temporary Computer Cards are available for 30 days for $5 or 60 days for $10. You must read the Temporary Computer Card policy and fill out an application in the Reference Department.

   Sims Library accepts cash or checks. We cannot accept credit or debit cards.
